The Purpose of God

As Christians we should affirm our belief in the one-eternal God. God is the Creator and Lord of the universe. God has revealed himself in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God governs all things according to the purpose of his will. He has been calling out from this planet a people for himself. These people have been placed into the Kingdom of God and these people are his servants and his witnesses of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dennis you are not all that!

After I first committed my life to the Lord, I used to walk around giving praise to God like I had just won the lottery. I praised God in a way like my sins deserved to be pardoned by God because I did something that required God to forgive me of my sins. I thought of myself  in a way like God owes me something because I prayed the right prayer and behaved in a certain way that earned his forgiveness. This was a false notion. In me, there lies nothing worthy of God’s forgiveness or pardon of my sins. In me, there lies only sin that is worthy of death and condemnation from a sovereign God who is holy and true. Each day I give thanks to God Almighty for Jesus Christ because only he deserves life not death. Only Jesus can save me from this body of sin and death. This I pray that I would never forget.

What do people say about the identity of Jesus?

The Encarta Dictionary says that Jesus is the "Bible Founder of Christianity." This dictionary goes on to say that he is "a Jewish religious teacher who lived from 4 b.c. to a.d 33. His life and teachings form the basis of Christianity. Christians believe he is the Son of God. Also called Christ." What do you believe? Well, I believe that Jesus Christ is not only the Son of God, but he is the only begotten Son of God. I believe that he was begotten before all ages - even before the beginning of time as we know it. Wow! This person is super! He is my Lord and Savior and I love him more than words can ever fully explain.

Humanity is Guilty of Sin Before God

Yesterday, we answered the question “Will God punish humanity for disobedience and apostasy?” We answered with an affirmative because God is terribly displeased with our inborn as well as our actual sins. God will justly judge our sins and he will punish unsaved sinners. We must understand that every person on earth that is alive and that ever was alive is guilty of sinning against God. There is only one person who is an exception to this most important indictment, and his name is Jesus who is the Son of God.  Jesus is the Christ. He is the savior of humanity. The Holy Spirit conceived Jesus and the Virgin Mary gave birth to him therefore he is sinless. God has declared humanity as being sinful and he says that these deserve death for their sins. However, you might say, “Is not God also merciful?” Yes! God is merciful but he is just too. See, the Justice of God requires that God punish sinners. Sinners have sinned against the highest majesty of God; therefore, God must punish sinners in both body and soul.

Will God punish humanity for disobedience and apostasy?

Heidelberg Catechism says that humanity could keep perfectly all the Laws of God" . . . but man, through the instigation of the devil, by willful disobedience deprived himself and all his posterity of this power." Heidelberg Catechism question number ten asks "Will God permit such disobedience and apostasy to go unpunished?" The Bible says "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain (Ex 34:7)." God will not allow the person who is guilty of breaking his commandments to go unpunished in this life and the life to come. The person who renounces their vows in Christ Jesus to God, the Father will chasten.

Is God unjust?

Heidelberg Catechism question number nine asks “Does not God, then, do injustice to man by requiring of him in His law that which he cannot perform?” The Law of God requires in sum that “. . . Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hand all the law and the prophets (Matt 22:37 – 40).” Christians are required by God to perfectly obey this because he is a Holy God and he expects us to be morally holy too. The problem is not with God, but it is with sinful humanity. Humanity can not keep all this perfectly. Humanity is prone by nature to hate God and their neighbor. But understand this: God did not create humanity wicked and perverse! God created man good and after his own image. Humanity was created righteous and truly holy that everyone might know God to the fullest as supreme creator and ruler. God had planned in eternity to bring his people into eternal blessedness so that we may praise and glorify him because he is worthy to be praised and honored. The old nature of believers became corrupt from the fall and disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, in the Garden of Eden. Form the fall the nature of humanity became corrupt and all of humanity inherits this corrupt nature at conception and are born in sin. Unless we are born again by the Spirit of God, we are so depraved that we are completely incapable of any good and prone to all evil. Therefore, God is not unjust! God does not do injustice to us by requiring of us in his law that which we cannot perform because initially God made us so that we could perform it, but Adam and Eve chose to break the Law of God and as a result all of humanity has become corrupt.

One Creed, One God

A creed is a statement of beliefs. It is a formal summary of the principles of the Christian faith. Do you know the creeds of the Christian faith? The Apostles' Creed begins with the statement that "I believe in God the Father Almighty creator of heaven and earth." The apostles of the New Testament in the Bible believed in one God, the Supreme Being of the universe. They believed that God is the Spiritual Father of all humanity. They believed that God is all powerful, all knowing, and always present (eternal). So powerful is he that he created the heavens and the earth and all things visible and invisible. This is no ordinary God. The apostles believed in an extraordinary God. What do you believe?

The Grace that Overflows

The grace of God in Christ Jesus overflows without bounds. Oh, how I adore thee Almighty Father in heaven. Have mercy upon me because I have sinned against you, a gracious and loving God to all, especially to those who have faith in Christ Jesus. I have taken your gifts and have cast them upon a dunghill filled with vanity. For  Jesus' sake forgive me and set me on high once again so that I may love you and return to a state of peace and joy that can only be found in Christ Jesus our Lord. I believe that you have heard my prayers and have granted to me my supplication this day. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Why am I so miserable?

Heidelberg Catechism asks “From where do you know your misery?” I would like to add sin. From where do you know your sin and misery? The Word of God says “. . . by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is knowledge of sin.” In other words, “no one can ever be made right in God’s sight by doing what his law commands. For the more we know God’s law, the clearer it becomes that we aren’t obeying (Rom 3:20 NLT).” Furthermore, I am convinced that we are not able to obey the Law of God. This leaves us with nothing. Humanity is in a horrible state before God because he has declared us sinful; therefore, our misery is great. We know this from the Law of God. Yet, lest we be mistaken, the Law of God is not evil. Paul makes this clear when he says “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not know lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet (Rom 7:7 KJV). For this reason we need a savior because God expects us to perfectly obey his Law. This is why I thank God every day for the perfect obedience of Jesus Christ our Lord because he obeyed God’s Law perfectly over several hundred years ago and God accepted his deeds as adequate enough to cover our inability to perfectly obey his Law. Christ lives in the believer by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit bears witness of the righteousness of God through us for the glory of Christ. When we do obey the Law of God it is a testimony of the power of God.
